Kini is a cute coastal tourist resort, very popular, surrounding the homonymous sandy beach. It is situated at a distance of some 9 kilometers western to Hermoupolis and counts some 450 permanent residents, in their majority occupied in tourism. The settlement has a small port for small tourist, fishing and excursion boats and is the departure point for the excursion boats that get the visitors to nice beaches, accessible only from the sea.
There are many alternatives for accommodation, within a nice landscape and very good facilities for tourists. Kini is also famous for the breathtaking sunset, ideal for taking photos.
Swimming is possible at the nice sandy beach in front of the settlement, at the shade of the tamarisk trees. The visitor may also go to the nearby beaches of Lotos (“lotus”) and Delfini (“dolphin” in Greek), but also to the more remote beaches of Barbaroussa, Aetos (“eagle” in Greek), Lia and Grammata, accessible only by excursion boats. The beach of Grammata (“letters” in Greek) owes its names to the inscriptions of the Roman and Byzantine periods, visible on the steep rocks of the beach. At all these beaches, inaccessible by land route, you will admire impressive rock formations, steep hillsides and breathtaking heights, but you will also find tiny secluded sandy beaches with crystal clear clean sea to swim in.
In the area of the settlement you may visit a lot of interesting sightseeing: within the settlement, at the beach you will see the statue of the Mermaid, a work of the sculptor G. Xenoulis; you may also go to the small church of Aghios Petros at the port and to the Catholic church dedicated to Virgin Mary. It is worth visiting the small but quite original Museum of Fishing Boats, Aquatic Life and Marine Shells, situated within the village.
Close enough to the village there is the Holy Monastery of Aghia Barbara (Ste Barbara), with a nice view to Kini. Here you may also buy nice hand woven textiles.
Two local religious feasts (“panighyri”) are organized in the village: one in honor of Aghios Petros (St. Peter) on the name day of the saint celebrated on the 29th of June. During this feast the icon of the saint is embarked in a boat and a process takes place in the sea; the boat with the icon is accompanied by several boats bedecked with flags, a really fascinating spectacle. The second feast takes place on the 15th of August, celebrating the Assumption of Virgin Mary.
For any problem you should address to the nearby capital of Hermoupolis, 9 kilometers far away to the East.
Access to Kini is easy by public buses with frequent service, by taxi and by rented or private car and motorbikes. For those reaching the place by boat or yacht, the small port of the settlement is available for mooring.
